synopsis
![]() Thirteen year old Nelly doesn’t have time for superficial girls talk. Books are her only company because she wants to become an astronomer. The love to the stars connects her with her heart-throb, sweet sixteen year old prince of Luxemburg Edouard. When the girls’ basketball team from her school is invited to Luxemburg under the aegis of prince Edouard, she knows she has to get into the team! Nelly is a complete loser in sports, though, and urgently needs help. Good for her that there is boy in the neighborhood called Max Minsky, who makes a deal with Nelly: he teaches her how to play basketball and she does his homework in return. Max is a brilliant basketball player but a complete loser in school. By practicing every day Nelly misses her hebraic class and puts her Bat Mizwa at risk, which makes her jewish mother Lucy angry. Nelly tries to accommodate family, sport and school but in the end she has to decide what is really important to her. Director Anna Justice tells a coming-of-age story in a very special way in her adorable cinematic debut “Max Minsky und Ich”. Focus is on Nelly, an ambitious 13 year old heroine, who has to find her way in the chaotic German-Jewish daily routine. There is also Max, her schoolmate and basketball talent, who suddenly plays an important role in Nelly’s live. While both have to grapple with annoying mothers, absent fathers and tough teachers, both learn something about their big love and true friendship. The script to “Max Minsky und ich” was written by Holly-Jane Rahlens following her bestselling book „Prinz William, Maximilian Minsky und ich", published in 2003, through which she also won the “Deutsche Jugendliteraturpreis”. Zoe Moore, also known from “Pigs will fly”, carries the movie as such a charming leading actress, accompanied by Emil Reinke (“Türkisch für Anfänger”). |
